Another book with no chapter headings but probably one of my more complex storylines. Because there was a criminal offence involved in this case it meant having to do some extra research.
So I went off to Bray Garda Station which is where Detective Siobhán Farrell is based. I was lucky that there was a female detective there, Donna McGowan, who was very helpful in giving me the information I needed and in bringing me to see the cells and the interview rooms. There was a part of me thinking that I could start writing crime fiction after all the things I learned. But I’m not quite ready to make that particular leap yet. However if I ever do I’ll also get in touch with Damian Hogan, of the Irish Gardai who was very helpful too.
(For non-Irish readers, you’ll already have guessed that the Gardai is the name for the Irish police force!)
Because of the subject matter, bigamy, I also did a bit of investigation into how and why this occurs. While there are some instances of people doing the same as Frank, the more usual reasons for bigamy are financial, or for reasons of residency. There are quite a number of occasions where one partner married young and has been separated for a long time but didn’t, for whatever reason, get a divorce. When they meet a new partner they don’t tell them about the previous marriage and then re-marry in a bigamous ceremony. Sometimes (as was the situation in one particular case I looked at) the previous marriage doesn’t come to light until the death of the person concerned. Which is another interesting story…..
